Why should you rekey your new home?

Who has my keys? Should I rekey? These are questions that every homeowner should ask themselves.

Moving into a new home is both exciting and stressful. Working with realtors, movers, and home inspectors – it can be overwhelming. It’s not surprising that one of the most overlooked aspects of moving is security.

If you’re moving into an older home, there is a long list of people who might have your keys. The previous owner might think he gave all the keys to you, but can you be sure? How many people lived in the home? Did the neighbors or friends have copies? What about repairmen or cleaning services?  If any recent work was done on the home, it’s possible that contractors still have copies of the keys.  The only way to be certain that you can account for every key is to rekey your locks.

Think you’re safe because your home is brand new? Think again. Builders, subcontractors and realtors could all have keys. Again, the only way you can know for sure who has your keys is to rekey the locks.

The simplest thing you can do to improve your security is have your locks rekeyed. Rekeying is cheaper than installing new locks and deadbolts. When a locksmith rekeys a lock, he changes the pins within the cylinder so that the old key no longer works.  At Sequoia Door, we charge $10 per cylinder and you get keep all of your original hardware. This is a big benefit if you already have high security locks.

In addition to added security, there can be other benefits to rekeying your home. Tired of juggling separate front door, back door, and deadbolt keys? In most cases, we can key all of your locks and deadbolts alike so that you only need one house key to open all of your locks.  While we’re there, we’ll also inspect your locks and adjust them so that they work smoothly.

Of course if you want to upgrade your current locksets and deadbolts, we can do that, too.

Be safe and secure. Rekey your locks when you move into a new home.
